This became a first for us. The first DNF.
The book opens with a Prologue – one year ago: Georgiana
(Georgie) is feeling awful. The previous night her best friend of twenty years
Madelyn, said she’d broken up with her long-standing boyfriend because she was
exploring her sexuality. Madelyn added that Georgie, who’s been out for years,
shouldn’t worry because Madelyn would “never date her”. Obviously Madelyn
thought she was being reassuring about the friendship, but since Georgie has
been in love with her best friend, she decides to run away. So she leaves town.
The next chapter is present day. Madelyn, Georgie and their
two friends, Nadia and Hannah, have a tradition of taking a holiday together
for a few days after Christmas. In the past few months Madelyn has discovered
that she is in love with Georgie and is excited about telling her.
A few more chapters move back and forth between past and
present before Madelyn tells Georgie her feeling.
Georgie’s response: Fury.
Georgie’s inexplicable reaction juxtaposed with Madelyn’s
vulnerability made us HATE Georgie. We mean literally hate the character.
We struggled to read some more. Tried speed reading. Tried skip
reading (read the end and then go back and try). But Georgie remained terrible
(even in the past) and in the future. There was nothing redeeming about Georgie and her constant taking out her anger on Madelyn who is loving, accepting and really trying to hold the relationship together all through the years that they have known each other. Georgia shows very little regard for Madelyn's feelings all through and especially in the end when Madelyn's proposes. It makes us wonder just why Madelyn loves her.
A big, fat ‘no’ for this book.
