First off: we totally heart romances with mature MCs. We
also completely understand late-in-life coming-of-age moments. So we should
have liked this book more than we actually did.
Maggie and George are getting married just eight months
after they’ve met. Maggie’s mother, Gloria and George’s mother, Bethany, have
their own misgivings about the speed of their decision, but their children have
made up their minds. So the two moms go to the engagement with a brave smile. When
she is about to leave with her date (Kendra), Gloria is stopped by a familiar
looking lady who introduces herself as George’s mom. (Yes, the kids didn’t
introduce their parents to each other).
Gloria and Bethany knew each other in high school, when
Bethany was cool and sexy and Gloria was totally crushing on her. Thirty-five
years and with their own life’s experiences under their belts, they meet again and
find an easy friendship. Gloria is still crushing on a seemingly straight
Bethany. Bethany is having a slightly late-in-life questioning of her own
sexuality. Gloria and Bethany have a relationship that grows stronger even as
their childrens’ relationship falter and fails.
Somehow, inexplicably, we couldn’t connect with the story or
the MCs. We really liked Bethany, particularly her embracing undiscovered parts
of herself. We didn’t like Gloria in any of her roles: either s a
lover/girlfriend or as a mother. In fact, we found her an epic fail as a
mother. The character that drew most emotion was the tragic Maggie. We only
completely felt for and with her.
This is at best, an okay read.
