Calling the Dead By Ali Vali

⭐⭐⭐⭐

A crime thriller built around an irresistible romance. A great combination, indeed.

Detective Sept Savoie is called out to investigate a murder. The body is found behind one of New Orleans’ most famous restaurants run by the formidable matriarchal family of the Blanchards. One of Sept’s first suspects is Keegan Blanchard, owner and head chef of the restaurant behind which the dead body was found. However, when more bodies start turning up, Keegan is quickly cleared of any suspicion. But the attraction between Sept and Keegan builds. The story alternates between the growing relationship between Keegan and Sept and solving the mystery of the increasingly brutal murders.

We absolutely love the romance in this book. The solving of the mystery seemed a little pat and more based on luck than Sept’s talent but it is engrossing all the same.

Keegan is an adorable character and Sept is solidly likeable. Their chemistry is palpable. Their families are well detailed and create a complete milieu for their relationship. The tension, as the killer closes around Sept, build well.

This is an excellent and engrossing read…definitely recommended.

PS: The second book with these characters, Answering the Call, is even better than the first.
