understand the pull of extreme sports wherein the person is willing and wanting
to take avoidable risks. So choosing to hike a difficult terrain through bad
weather warning is not something we can empathise with at all.
Robin Hawke has an outfitting business in Black Bear
Mountain and leads hiking groups through trails of various levels of
difficulties and also takes care of hunting and fishing groups. Back Land
magazine is for all outdoor enthusiasts and also raises environmental concerns and
issues. Marianne Jones formerly wrote for a business magazine but after
and exposé on questionable actions of a major oil company, she is fired from
her job because she refused to reveal her source. The quintessential city girl
is now a part of Back Land and her editor feels that a hike through the
mountains would help her understand her job and the magazine better. Robin
finds Marianne infuriating but attractive. And the attraction is not one-sided.
The author raises a lot of points: impact of business on
environment, the danger of more potent drugs, loopholes in law regarding
drilling oil from public lands, the state of the indigenous Indian in USA.
While both the MCs are averagely nice enough, the book reads like an uninvolved
narrative and you never get immersed into it treading the path of attraction, emotion
or danger with the characters.
