Romances involving royalty, particularly princess and
bodyguard, are a common trope in lesfic and general romances. Something about the
fantasy of a princess (or any famous personality) getting romantically involved
with their bodyguard (or personal trainer) seems to appeal to all romantics of the
world.
Princess Alexandra is the only progeny of the current
King of England and therefore heir to the throne. The Princess is thirty-four,
completely scandal-free, beloved of the masses, beautiful, kind and perfect in
all ways. For a few years there was a shortlisted ‘beau’ or husband for her but
she is not interested in him so she’s given a list of suitors and expected to
select one of them in a year. The Princesses’ bodyguard has a riding accident
and Sergeant Erin Kennedy is selected as the new bodyguard because she fulfils
Alexandra’s two most important criteria: a woman who can ride exceptionally well.
As Erin spends time around the Princess she gets a glimpse of the person
beneath the polished persona – a person who may be lonely, a vulnerable young
lady.
The problem with this book is its superficiality. Princess
Alexandra is written fairly well and has at least some layers to make her an
interesting but there is absolutely nothing to Erin. In fact, given a day more,
we’d even forget the character. There are some good steamy scenes between the
two but really, to making the-princess-and-the-commoner-trope work requires a
lot more. We would strongly recommend The Princess Affair if this is the gig you’re looking for.
This one is one of those vapid reads which you cannot hate
but cannot like either.
