This is a stretch-of-imagination romantic madcap entertainer
replete with misunderstandings, miscommunication, inexplicable love, an
over-the-top villain and that one big gesture in the climax.
Twenty-nine year old Caroline (Cali) Bell had hoped to
author comic books but has had no luck. Now her lawyer father has issued an
ultimatum – she needs to stop chasing a mirage and join his firm as a legal
secretary. Her last foray in her wish-land is ShudderCon. Esta Rey has a job
she likes in a publishing firm. Her life is neatly organised but grey. She allows
herself to be herself for a few days each year – during ShudderCon. And the ‘herself’
that Esta is hiding from everyone she knows is the fact she is gay. Her first experience with
another woman was a decade earlier at ShudderCon and ever since then she’s been
looking for that girl – Cali – even as she determinedly beds as many women as
she can during the con.
The MCs are a well-matched couple and the goings-on absurd
enough to be totally amusing. This is an unpretentious light entertainer, which
does its job well.
