⭐⭐⭐⭐
A fun romcom which flows fluidly and fast. Celebrity
(actress) and fake relationship trope but created with imagination.
Emily Bartlett, a bookshop owner in Oxford is dumped rather
cruelly by her fiancée of two years. In some kind of an inexplicable reaction
she flies off to Las Vegas for a weekend. Ruby Knight, a C-list TV
actress, has had enough of her mother-cum-manager and drives off to Vegas on a
whim. The two find themselves sitting across each other in a bar. A rocky first
conversation later they find common ground and spend the rest of the evening
together ending up getting smashed. The next morning, Ruby creeps away from the
hotel room, turn on her phone in her car and finds that she has seemingly got
married to Emily the previous night and that has sent her stock soaring. Go
figure. Emily gets up after Ruby has left and finds the marriage certificate –
much to her horror. She googles Ruby to find her and get an annulment. Ruby’s
mother has different plans with her sights set on Ruby getting a major role in
a franchise which will rocket her from C to A-list.
The characters are not unique, but the writing makes the
emotions and struggles of the two MCs completely immersive. Their draw to each
other, insecurity about themselves, their situation and their weird connection
is all so superbly written.
This is a short, fun, highly entertaining read.
