This book is almost unrelentingly
angsty with ambiguous morality but hugely readable and strangely satisfying.
Amy is engaged to Josh when she first
meets his twin sister Celeste. Celeste works with the organisation Médecins Sans Frontières/Doctors without
Borders and is often in seriously dangerous places in the world trying to save
lives. Amy’s first impression of Celeste is anything but good. It is a year
later that they meet again. This time, while they aren’t exactly the best of
friends, new dynamics enter their relationship.
The story is spread across almost a
decade and a lot; a whole lot; happens during that time in Amy’s life. The chemistry
is absolutely riveting and despite the uncomfortable feeling of both women
cheating (Amy is cheating her husband and Celeste is cheating her brother) it
is impossible to do anything but totally root for them.
Both the characters are flawed but
their feelings for each other overcomes everything. Their deep, deep connection
is the kind of old-fashioned feelings that totally resonate with us. We are
usually completely taken by the idea that love doesn’t change or go away but
takes root and remains the same over a lifetime. And that is what Amy and
Celeste have even when walking on the very, very fine edge of love and hate.
This is another gem that first made
appearance as Xena fanfic. In fact, you can see some echoes of Xena and Gabrielle
in Celeste and Amy.
This is a long, sometimes frustrating,
a lot of times hot but always engrossing read.
