What this book taught us: there is
something that can be termed as ‘long hot’ burn rather than slow burn. More than half
the book is all about the longing that the two MCs have for each other, but all
those pesky, uncontrollable emotions are bursting across two or three days. The
number of pages devoted to the growing feelings that need to be controlled are
enough to make it seem like slow burn but it is more like ‘fast and hot’
burn in terms of the span of time in the book.
Emery Bates is a workaholic PR
(Director) who actually defines herself by only her work. She is intense and controlled.
Jordan Davis is a free-spirited, easy going artist who goes with the flow. The
two are neighbours with an easy friendship going on between them. Emery is
invited to a college friend’s wedding in Hawaii and doesn’t want to go without
a date. She asks Jordan to come as her pretend girlfriend to make Emery’s
coming out to her friends easier. With a caveat of complete honesty between
them, Jordan agrees.
The two MCs are extremely well described physically and emotionally.
We love it when we know who the people are. The characterisations are so well
done that as a reader we can feel the angst of out-of-character behaviour, of
turmoil and of what each word and act means.
A fairly light romance, this is worth a read.
