Though this is the third book of a series, it is the first
one we read, and rather liked it. In fact, it felt like a standalone book,
which by itself is quite a win for the author.
Briony Gatewood is a professor in a prestigious university.
After losing her partner, she’s relocated with her son and has also made a few
friend on and off campus. In an unexpected curveball, she is nominated to plan
and conduct an entirely new class which could either damage her career or make
it fly. The other volunteered co-professor for this class is the rather
mysterious M Desiderius who has zero interaction with her colleagues. As they
start working together, the two women get to know each other and uncover past
scars.
Briony is a lovely, lovely character – though we really
wonder whether such people can truly exist. That doesn’t stop us finding her
awesome. M has her issues and our sympathy. The two together work very well. On
the whole, this was a good read.
