Light-hearted humour is Lydon’s style of writing but in this
one she is firmly in the romcom space, so even the meetings and encounters
between the MCs are impossible and slapstick-y.
Heidi Hughes, a photographer, decided to take the
exceptionally brave step of becoming a single mom and now has an eighteen-month-old
daughter, Maya. Now that Maya is older, Heidi is ready to get back on the horse
and try and balance motherhood, career and hopefully, a relationship. Eden Price
is perfectly happy being single, thank you. A successful creative director of a
marketing agency, Eden likes order and is quite certain that she doesn’t want
the chaos that accompanies kids in her life. Except that she hadn’t quite
factored in Heidi and a mind-melting kiss with her.
The thing we totally loved in this book was the determined
effort both the MCs make to have a relationship though there are more than
enough false starts to derail it even before it can begin. We get that the book
is aiming to be just a comedic outing, but we’d have loved to see Eden and Maya
actually bonding. Without that, the Heidi-Eden relationship doesn’t feel complete.
We really, really liked Heidi. While Eden is not particularly likeable,
especially in her first response to getting to know about Maya (and at other
times too), she redeems herself by sticking it out and putting in effort to
pursue the thing with Heidi.
Lydon’s writing is always fun so this is a good enough read
for the space (no angst, no depth, just fluff and fun) it aims to occupy.
