This is a first-person narration of a relationship spanning
across decades.
Claire, an ex-military soldier needs mental health
assessment and clearance for an assignment. Justine is the therapist assigned
to her. There are immediate sparks between the two and then personal and professional
lines are crossed thus starting their life-long affair. Typical of any
relationship they have up and downs – all recorded in Claire’s voice.
We’re not quite sure where we stand on this one. It is well
written, but maybe another way of telling the tale would’ve worked better in
making the characters come alive. We didn’t particularly like Claire who seemed
a little too all-knowing, unrealistically self-aware and not someone we could
warm up to. On the other hand, Justine, with all her foibles and failing was a
much more likeable person.
This was an okay read – mostly because it is not very long and
we did rather like Justine.
