This one was going good with great chemistry and excellent
setting of opposites in the MCs till
it just unravelled completely.
Carly Caldecott, a slightly flighty, mostly
irresponsible rich girl is set to get married to her much-younger girlfriend in
Vegas during ShudderCon but almost literally first faints and then sprints away
from the aisle. Jane Torres works as a maid at the Masquerade, where ShudderCon
is hosted. The runaway bride tries to hide in a closet where Jane is already
hiding. Carly is none too happy with her own behaviour and enlists Jane’s help –
with a lot of money – to help Carly make amends. The impulsive heiress and the reluctant
maid form an unlikely couple till they start feeling an attraction to each
other.
Much was made about Jane’s strength and integrity. The strength
made sense given her living circumstances, but she didn’t show much backbone or
integrity. Carly, on the other hand, is frivolous but sweet with more depth
than her superficial surface suggests. Their attraction was getting good. And then…
Jane practically flakes on Carly without informing her and then takes offense at Carly’s behaviour.
Jane is quite awful to a colleague too. The worst: Carly leaves a cheque of
twenty thousand dollars for Jane and leaves Vegas. Egoistical Jane does nothing
to reach out to Carly plus for some inexplicable reason, Jane actually decides
she deserves the money and encashes it. Jane’s character disintegrated at a
breath-taking pace and destroyed any enjoyment we were feeling.
A better book would’ve been where Jane didn’t encash the cheque but find enough strength within to chase
her dream. Where Carly doesn’t become penniless but becomes a pillar in her
family business. Where Jane doesn’t selfishly pursue her own dreams and only
goes to find Carly much, much later.
This one is sadly lacking.
