If You Only Knew by Jea Hawkins

⭐⭐

This book has promising premise but the potential is not realised because of the length. It is too short to really do justice to either the characters or the relationships that it creates.

Author, Sabrina Covell has a complicated relationship with her famous TV anchor sister, Miranda. In the past, Sabrina dated two of Miranda’s exes and was burnt badly in both instances. One fine morning she wakes up to find an absolutely lovely young lady, Blythe Jansen, sitting in her kitchen, a purported ‘gift’ from Miranda. Blythe turns out to be everything that Sabrina wants in a woman – except that Sabrina is suspicious of anything from Miranda.

The premise has potential for so much character exploration and development. It could’ve build a stronger base of attraction between Sabrina and Blythe and developed that relationship – like actually developed it instead of whatever it is that happens in its current avatar. It could’ve actually dealt with the relationship between the sisters. However, none of these things are particularly addressed. In fact, despite the whole build-up about Miranda’s awfulness, Sabrina is the one who falls short especially with Blythe inasmuch Sabrina never allows Blythe the dignity of having her say.

An okay read, but frustrating – so not really recommended.
