Smile Number Seven by Melissa Price

⭐⭐

Celebrity, closeted actress, 26 year age gap, Oscars, small town girl, exes wanting back, huge gestures…so many, many ingredients that make the right mix for mindless entertainment. But this one doesn’t make the cut.

Julia Dearling lives on a ranch and owns a diner, Starlight Diner, in a small town in the desert. She has the biggest crush on Katarina (Rina) Verralta, a four time Oscar winning actress. So when one rainy evening Julia comes face-to-face with Rina in the parking lot of her diner, she is a puddle. Rina is stranded and the only obvious thing is for Julia to open her home to the star.

The problem with this book was Julia’s uneven characterisation. It felt that the author planned out the scenes between the MCs but didn’t think of all the bits that would really bind the scenes together. Bits like building their relationship, creating connection and chemistry before they have sex, consistency in characterisation (Julia’s – she goes from star-struck to super confident without pause; from supportive and understanding to wanting to break-up because of invisibility without Rina having really given her enough cause etc. etc.), conversations et al.

This is an easy, but forgettable read.
