Intense and gritty this book is not
particularly an easy read but it is gripping. It’s been republished after five years and is still a very strong story with issues issues that remain current.
Okinawa is a Naval station with just
three women in the company, MA3 Kim Lockhoff, MA2 Reese Marion and
another young lady barely out of high school. Kim is a quintessential party
girl, who Reese believes is the type responsible for the poor image of women in
uniform. When Kim is suspected to be pregnant, as the only other woman with
enough experience, Reese is asked to reach out to and give support to Kim.
Reese approaches Kim reluctantly with her prejudices firmly in place. But she
discovers Kim to be quite contrary to everything she had projected.
Both the MCs are strong and vulnerable. They are tough yet
scared. They are angry yet helpless. They are painted into a corner but fight.
While Reese’s past is tragic, the immediacy of Kim’s situation makes her
situation more urgent and compelling.
The book unforgivingly spells out male attitude towards
women and the reality of women’s struggles to be safe – not only in the Navy,
but everywhere.
This one is big time recommended.
Warning: Rape is the main theme of this book.
