Dating Game (Music of the Soul #3) by Erik Schubach

⭐⭐

It is the weirdest thing to read lesfic written by a guy. It is just weird. But then with so many women writing gayfic, we decided to give this one a shot because the premise sounded alright.

Crystal’s BFF, Bev, is gay and the two trade off playing wingman for each other. Bev has just caught her girlfriend cheating on her and to cheer her up, the two friends make tracks to Ballyhoo a lesbian bar that attracts the more lipstick end of the lesbian spectrum. One of the women Crystal shortlists for Bev turns out to be interested in Crystal. The shortlisted woman, Riley (aka Jane), and Crystal end up kissing and making a bet on who plans better dates.

Clearly, this is meant to be a romcom. It is mostly okay and sweet enough, though it is difficult to imagine the entire cast as anything older than teenagers. Also, that whole bit about Bev discarding clothes all the time…only a guy can imagine that.

With Crystal constantly talking about not being so straight after all and the frequent kissing and more with Riley, it is impossible to fathom how Riley could not pick up on what Crystal was saying. The required conflict comes a little forced. After the conflict, there was too much onus on Crystal to prove herself to Riley – over and over again.

This one tethers on the borderline of meh and not-totally-bad.
