Dealing with rape, this book handles the issue sensitively.
It is an extremely well written crime novel where the police are uncovering and
solving the most heinous crime of rape.
Cash Braddock, a drug dealer is a confidential informant
with the Sacramanto Police Department. Her handler is detective Laurel Kallen.
Cash and Laurel are also romantically involved. Laurel’s sister, Lane is raped
and both, Laurel and Cash get involved in what seems to be a serial rapist
using ketamine to drug the girls before raping them.
The book is really, really well written and Cash is
sensitive and engaging. Therein lies our problem. We have an issue with
anything (books, articles, movies, TV shows) that romanticise criminals in any
way. Dealing with drugs is not a small crime and it is not acceptable that a
drug dealer be made heroic. Cash seems to be there for everyone in her life in
the nicest ways possible. (Of course, we felt Cash wasn’t quite there for
girlfriend Laurel quite as much or in the same way.)
The way this book ended indicates that this is not the last
that we are seeing of these characters. There is more (probably much more) to
come.
While the writing was great, the characters very likeable,
dialogues a lot of fun and excellent relationships between various characters;
the deterrent (a HUGE one) is the fact that the MC is a criminal being made
palatable.
