In Tansy, Brown has created one of the most achingly vulnerable
and movingly courageous characters ever. She is damaged and broken in so many ways because of
the wholly abusive relationship with the cheating ex with whom she had been
from the time she was a freshman. Yet she is brave enough to set out to reclaim
herself and tentatively start a relationship with Cai, her tattoo artist. Tansy
is a character that touches you and brings out a fierce sense of
protectiveness.
In Cai, the author has created an appropriate counterpoint
to Tansy. Someone who is protective but unsure of what she wants in a
relationship. Someone who wants to be there and is slightly out of her depth.
Someone who rises to Tansy’s needs and insecurities despite her own
uncertainties.
Though completely a romance, it is the characters,
especially Tansy, that capture you and stay with you. A book that will get you
totally emotionally invested and remain with you.
