Blame it on the Chardonnay by A. Emma Hollis

⭐⭐☆

This book is interestingly laid out and written inasmuch it doesn’t follow one particular relationship. It is a narration of the various relationships that the protagonist, Jenna, has over years. It is mostly, but not completely, linear in narration. Each chapter deals with one important relationship in Jenna life, including women, her mom’s dog (aka her little brother) and her mom. Each chapter is complete in itself and yet flows seamlessly with the whole.

Written with a lot of humour, Jenna is a Robin Alexander-esque character with her propensity for serious conversations with dogs and worms, her general easy-going affability and her quirkiness. We were thoroughly enjoying Jenna and actively rooting for her and her first relationship (Trish) to get a HEA till we came to the chapter on Zoe. Utterly, totally sweet Zoe. By the end of that chapter, every single romantic cell in us was mortally wounded by Jenna’s behaviour with and treatment of Zoe and after that we just couldn’t feel for Jenna, though she remained funny still.

This is a short novella which is quite enjoyable. Dial your expectations right (don’t look for gooey-eyed romance like us), pick it up for its humour and you will be very entertained.
