Slow burn in a novella is not easy to achieve. But this one
does it fine. And it is filled with interesting characters.
Forty-six year old Gina Thompson has decided to give
up her mega-bucks-earning job as a realtor to pursue photography. Six years
back she’d lost her wife of twenty years and brought up their daughter Chelsey.
Chelsey’s moved out leaving Gina with no responsibilities to tie her down and enough
savings to be comfortable. Gina’s best friend Drew and Sam keep trying to get
Gina back into the game but that’s not happening. Till she meets Grace at a
party at Sam’s. Grace is a photographer with commitment-phobia. For reasons of
her own, Grace refuses to let anyone love her. She shies away from relationships.
An unexpected friendship develops between Grace and a completely smitten Gina.
The MCs are nice and their relationship is developed at an
even pace. This should’ve been a full-length novel to explore both the
characters better and give them more growth. As it were, in the way it is, you’re
left wanting to understand Grace better and see where the relationship goes. The
book ends on a strange not with is not sad, not HFN, not HEA – it’s just
dangling.
Nevertheless, this is a good read.
