This book is silly and funny in the
typical Markinson way.
Josie Adams has just been fired humiliatingly from her job
as a speechwriter by the Presidential candidate she was working for in America.
With her life having fallen apart, she goes to the Cotswolds in England, to her
mom, to lick her wounds and think about what to do next. Harriet (Harry) Powell
was sacked and dumped within six months of each other in London. Her uncle in
Cotswold runs a publication that Harry takes over.
The author uses every cliché about Yankee versus Brit but it
is enjoyable. The whole ‘missing ginger’ track starts off really funny.
Harriet’s cluelessness, bumblingness and denseness when it comes to Josie
(particularly Josie practically throwing herself at Harry rather obviously)
could have been irritating – except that it isn’t, because we know people like
Harry. Ok, maybe in one scene it did get irritating and grating – forever making
us not like Harry much. Another reason we didn’t particularly take to Harry was
her treatment of her cousin, Cam. On the other hand, Josie is absolutely
adorable – open, vulnerable and honest.
The romance between the two MCs, however works. Their attraction and chemistry are engaging. Their banter mostly fun.
This is a light and fun book, meant to be read, enjoyed
while it lasts and forgotten. It’s a good choice for a few hours of
entertainment.
