Zana is a huge celebrity for doing nothing more than being
born to famous parents. Literally. She does nothing at all except post updates
on Instagram. She is dating Tia, a reality show semi-brity who’s gained more
publicity thanks to the Zana connection. On a skiing trip, Zana is wilful about
one last run and ends up seriously injured. Tia, and the rest of Zana’s ‘friends’
immediately disappear. Lacey is appointed as a care giver for Zana by her absentee
mother. Zana, rude, entitled, brattish and badly behaved – but awfully alone – not that
she spends a lot of time worrying about that. Lacey, montetarily strapped and dreaming
about returning to nursing school, shows spine in not taking all the rudeness
that Zana is dishing out. Immediacy and the fact that they are almost isolated
together for about twelve hours every day builds emotion and appreciation of
the other.
This is a promising enough premise, but skims the surface of
the characters and their relationship. Zana’s isolation, the shallowness of the
people in her life and her life itself offered rich material for deeper
exploration. Lacey, her pecuniary challenges, growing attraction to someone
completely out of her league were also possibilities for more layered building.
Neither happens completely. So strangely, this book ends up falling between an
out-and-out rom-com, meant to be superficial and a circumstance,
character, emotion and angst driven drama. The supporting characters including
Zana’s parents, Tia and other friends are total caricatures.
This is neither wow nor meh, tethering on the edge of not
really good and okay. Can be safely skipped.
