This was an extremely interesting read. First, because it is
set in Japan. Second, for the relationship development between the MCs and their
conversations.
Dr. Megan Maier, a Jew, is an American born and brought up
in Japan who has spent some time in Thailand also. After being widowed, Megan
returns to Japan and joins a private Jewish Hospital. There she runs into androgynous
Dr. Syler Terada, a pediatric surgeon, and is immediately attracted.
While the start is insta-attraction, the relationship builds
at a more even pace and intimacy comes slower. Megan has a lot of past that she
has to get over. Syler also has some past, but that is rather more normal, in
the sense it is having been dumped.
The Japanese role definitions within the lesbian world were
very surprising. The way Megan and Syler uncover and support each other’s
sexual questions and uncertainties was also rather lovely. We loved that the MCs
had conversations about these things too. The whole being Jewish, active
participant in the faith and its role in Megan’s live was also interesting.
One issue was that we could never quite get a picture of
what Megan looked like. Also, we felt that tiptoeing around Megan’s past went
on too long. Plus, since this is Book One, the end left us a little miffed –
because we look for more HEA than HFN. But guess Book Two will take care of
that. It would’ve been nice to get the meanings of the Japanese terms more
easily.
This book is worth a read and we are looking forward to
getting the HEA in Book Two soon.
